Join VATA for our Third Annual Hit the Hill Day in Richmond New!

VATA wins NATA’s Dan Campbell Award

Congratulations to Rose Schmieg, GAC chair, and Becky Bowers-Lanier, VATA lobbyist, for their roles in scoring a big win for the VATA. The VATA won the Dan Campbell Legislative Award (Class II), for raising the political visibility of the profession and organization. Rose and Amanda Caswell, VATA President-elect, were on-hand to receive the award at the NATA Annual Meeting and Symposium in New Orleans on June 18th.

The VATA earned this honor by sustained efforts such as the annual Capital Hill Day in Richmond and the development of the advocacy agenda. Congratulations, Rose and Becky!

VATA co-sponsors Secondary Schools Concussion Education Workshop

The Student-Athlete Protection Act was signed in to law by Governor Bob McDonnell in March 2010, and took effect in July, 2011. Since July, John Reynolds, the VATA’s Secondary School Athletic Trainers Committee chair, has been very busy assisting the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) in efforts to educate the public, school personnel, athletic trainers, physicians and parents about concussions. He helped coordinate a series of five workshops across the state during the month of August. The workshops were sponsored by the VATA, VDH, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, and Safe Kids Virginia.  Special thanks to Mitch Callis, ATC, VATA Region 4 representative; Kent Diduch, MD; and Doug Gregory, MD, for serving as presenters at these workshops. Thanks to John for his integral role in making these workshops a great success.
