2021 VATA Scholarship Recipient

Cade Watts

Cade recently graduated from Shenandoah University (SU) with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science. Soon after graduation he was certified as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the NSCA. He is continuing his education at SU as the pilot student for a Dual-Degree Master’s of Science in Athletic Training and Master’s of Public Health program. Upon graduation, he hopes to pursue a Doctorate in Athletic Training program specializing in
sports concussion through Temple University’s College of Public Health. Most recently, Cade became a guest contributor for the Sports Medicine Research blog by publishing a brief article, “Concussions: Is Submaximal Exercise Medicine?”, appraising the relationship between exercise therapies and time to return-to-activity.

2020-2021 Tom Jones Scholarship Recipient

Elizabeth Walker

My name is Beth Walker and I am a graduate from Chowan University with a degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching. While at Chowan I was a member of the softball team and played on the 2017 conference championship team. I was involved in many activities such as President of Honors College, Vice President of Rotaract and a member of multiple honors societies. I also participated in a semester long internship shadowing and helping my University’s athletic training staff. During this time I gained a greater appreciation and love for athletic training. In June I begin the Masters of Athletic Training program at Bridgewater College. I am excited for this journey and blessed to be the recipient of the VATA Tom Jones Scholarship.

2020-2021 Recipient

Rachel Scherbenske

My name is Rachel Scherbenske and I am from Chantilly, VA. I am a first year student in the Masters of Science in Athletic Training at the University of Virginia, where I also completed my undergraduate studies majoring in Kinesiology. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and mentors I've had thus far in just the short time I've been involved in the AT world. Eventually, I hope to complete a residency and pursue a Doctorate degree. I'm not sure where I'll end up long-term but I'm planning on keeping my options open, and I am so excited to explore all the opportunities within the AT profession!
